Action Guide

Clean Cooking:

Justa Stoves – Nicaragua

Why: The problem/opportunity

Three Billion people cook over open fires. This causes excessive pollution (black carbon) that significantly contributes to Global Warming. Additional adverse effects of open fire cooking include mortality (over 4 million deaths annually) and morbidity (respiratory illness, cancers, severe burns), gender (women and children) inequality, a decreased quality of life and deforestation.

What: The Solutions

It is providing cleaner cooking alternatives, especially in developing countries, and providing solutions to the issues described above. Solutions depend on the country, culture, economy and resources.

A Justa Stove typically results in a CO2 equivalent reduction of to 15 Tonnes over its lifetime for a USD 100 outlay.

Who: Beneficiaries + Stakeholders
  • Nicaraguan Communities
  • Rotary Club of Stratford
  • Rotary Club of London Hyde Park
  • Stove Team International
How: Implementation Ideas

Using the expertise of Stove Team International, we will be training and paying local villagers in Nicaragua to build the Justa Stove at a quality level. Suitable cooking utensils, along with education on their use and cooking methods will also be provided. Villagers will pay a small percentage of the cost and agree to plant trees each year for sustainability.

Where:

In Nicaragua, the Rotary Club of Stratford, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of London Hyde Park, is implementing an eco-friendly Justa Stove Project.  We are working closely with Stove Team International. This model would work well in most Latin American Countries.

Tips/Other ideas

  • Calculate your club or your family’s annual carbon footprint and offset it by sponsoring Justa cookstoves in Nicaragua. 15T CO2 per cookstove
  • Pilot projects have already been undertaken with input and buy-in by the local villagers. We are close to receiving the final word regarding the acceptance of our Global Grant Application, which will almost triple our existing funds.
