Plastic Research Project “Suomenlinna”

A project with Rotary and the Finnish Environmental Institute.

Location/Club:  Rotary Club of Helsinki City West, Baltic Sea, Herttoniemi, District 1420, Finland
Rotaries monitor the litter from a certain seashore in Suomenlinna, which is a fortress near Helsinki. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage in 1991.

Description

Three Rotary clubs from D1420 decided to monitor the litter for three years and three times a year: in spring, in summer and in autumn. All in all, 9 times. There is a sign on the beach which shows that Rotary District 1420 is making valuable work with other reliable and informed sources. With this action we relate to the Ministry of Education and Culture and with the Finnish Environmental Institute.

The Rotary members monitoring provides an opportunity to investigate the types of litter that maritime currents carry near a large city and to gain a better understanding of the sources of litter. During monitoring all litter 2,5 cm in size and larger in the research area is counted and classified.
