Wenatchee Confluence Rotary recently debuted the new D5060 environmental display items at the Wenatchee Earth Fair and Apple Blossom Youth Day in April. We had five goals:

  • Attractive & Inviting — great for membership
  • Engaging for all ages — activities like planting
  • Develops good habits — pledges
  • Forms a membership pipeline — pledges
  • Walks the talk — low waste

These materials are available for use by any club in the District, and were designed by Michelle Shermer, D5060 Environmental Committee Chair (Wenatchee), and funded with District Public Image dollars.  Display items include a fitted table cover, a 10’ vinyl banner, and two retractable banners that feature the six themes around which Rotary structures its environmental work.

Confluence Rotarians focused on three ESRAG campaigns – pollinators, plant-rich diets, and plastic reduction. Visitors to the booth learned about various ESRAG campaigns, were encouraged to make pledge commitments to them, and were offered packets of native seeds to support pollinators, pollinator bookmarks and magnets, and reusable sporks. Chelan Rotary’s 911 Glass Rescue project was also promoted.

Also on Youth Day, Confluence Rotary coordinated with local nonprofits, volunteers, and businesses to set-up stations to separate and collect compostable items, recycling, and garbage throughout the day. The club also provided compostable forks to participating food vendors. In past years all waste from the 11-day festival has been landfilled, and last year alone that amounted to 13 tons of garbage. Working with Winton Mfg. Compost Works, the club also designed and fabricated compostable cup collection stations, as well as providing plastic bottle and aluminum can recycling for the beer garden throughout the festival. Club volunteers also collected and transported glass from the beer garden to Chelan Rotary’s 911 Glass Rescue. The club hopes to expand these efforts in the future.
