Are you passionate about the environment and want to make a positive impact on the world? Would you enjoy connecting with Rotaractors and Rotarians to write about their inspiring, environmental work?  If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Regional Environment Reporter with the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG)!  Although unpaid, this position is an opportunity to build your portfolio of published environmental articles with a multinational readership.

About Us: ESRAG is part of Rotary International, a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, and leaders, volunteering our skills and resources to solve global and community needs. With over 4,000 friends and members around the globe, ESRAG provides inspiration, information, and resources to help Rotarians take effective environmental action, especially to mitigate and adapt to the humanitarian crisis of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Position Overview: As a Regional Environmental Reporter, you will connect with Rotoractors and Rotarians in your region and write about their environmental activities, programs, and projects. Stories about replicable projects can appear in ESRAG’s e-newsletter and blog series with over 4,000 subscribers on six continents. Regional reporters will also reach out to regional Rotary publications to pitch environmental stories. The ideal candidate will possess strong journalistic skills, proficiency in the language of the relevant Rotary regional magazine, and a passion for storytelling. Fluency in English is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Build a network of Rotaract and Rotarian contacts who can identify potential environmentally-related Rotary projects, programs, and activities in your region.
  • Identify potential stories and conduct interviews with Rotarians, Rotaractors, or Interactors who are directly involved in the project.
  • Collaborate with ESRAG Regional Chapters, editors of your regional Rotary Magazine, and other ESRAG team members to brainstorm ideas and develop story angles.
  • Complete articles for your regional Rotary magazine according to the schedule and content guidelines provided by the magazine’s editor. This includes pictures with appropriate release information.  With prior consent from the regional editor, submit stories on replicable projects to ESRAG’s global newsletter.
  • Stay informed about current events, trends, and issues relevant to our audience.  Link your regional reporting to these events and trends whenever possible.
  • Maintain high journalistic standards, including fact-checking and ethical reporting practices.
  • Utilize social media and other digital platforms to engage with regional audiences and promote content.

Background:

  • A passion for storytelling and a commitment to informing and engaging audiences about environmental issues and solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree or experience in journalism, communications, environmental studies, or a related field. If you have published articles or blog posts, please send some examples.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in regional language(s) and English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to network effectively using online social media tools.
  • Strong research and interviewing abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity when covering diverse communities.

What We Offer:
