From ESRAG Members.  Consolidated by Laurie Zuckerman

At ESRAG, we’re surrounded by passionate and thoughtful individuals who understand that leadership is much more than a title. So, we asked our members: What qualities do you admire most in a leader? The response was a collection of wisdom, born from years of experience and a shared commitment to making a difference.

Leadership: A Vision Rooted in Empowerment and Trust

Great leaders have a clear, forward-looking vision, inspiring those around them to rally together for a shared purpose. They know that building a better future requires the combined strengths of the whole team. Rather than seeking the spotlight, effective leaders rely on the expertise of others, creating an environment where each person can bring their strengths to the table.

A powerful leader doesn’t pretend to know it all. Instead, they trust the team to bring their vision to life, encouraging individual talents to flourish. They work with humility, showing appreciation for every contribution, large or small. Through this commitment to collective achievement, they foster a culture where everyone feels valued and motivated.

The Seven Qualities of Admirable Leadership

Our members distilled their insights into seven key qualities, each essential to the kind of leadership that inspires and uplifts:

  1. Humility
A great leader is humble, giving credit where it’s due and focusing on we over me. They delegate responsibilities wisely, lead by example, and aren’t afraid to take responsibility for the team’s actions, learning and growing from each experience.
  2. Equanimity and Calm
Calm in the face of challenges, leaders with equanimity bring balance, honesty, and resilience to their teams. They provide a steady presence that helps others feel secure and confident, even during difficult times.
  3. Vision
Leaders have an ambitious vision, dreaming big and pushing boundaries with innovative ideas. They are progressive thinkers who see not only what is but also what could be, guiding the team toward an inspiring future.
  4. Commitment
Committed leaders stay focused on strengths, both theirs and the team’s. They are enthusiastic encouragers who inspire those around them to achieve goals, reminding everyone of the purpose and joy in their work.
  5. Mentorship
Great leaders wear the hats of trainer, mentor, and coach. They are hands-on, guiding others through challenges, nurturing talents, and helping each person on their team reach their full potential.
  6. Collaboration and Inclusivity
Collaboration is key for effective leaders. They know the power of working together, fostering an inclusive environment where every voice is heard. They listen attentively, ask questions, and appreciate contributions from all directions.
  7. Memory and Organization
Good organization and recall help a leader remember past lessons while staying grounded in the present and focused on future success. This creates stability and trust within the team.

Together, these qualities form a blueprint for leadership that is empowering, inclusive, and forward-thinking. As ESRAG members show us, when a leader embraces these traits, they don’t just lead—they inspire others to join them in building a brighter future.
