Rtn. Devarajan, Chairman and Managing Director of Sambandan Spinning Mills and a devoted Rotarian, is leading by example in the global shift toward renewable energy. In 2022, he commissioned an impressive 5 MW rooftop solar project across four of his spinning mills, covering 15 roofs. As a pioneer in yarn manufacturing in South India, Sambandam Spinning Mills Limited is now at the forefront of sustainable energy practices, thanks to Devarajan’s vision.

Devarajan’s commitment to renewable energy began in the early 2000s with his investment in wind energy. As solar energy became more affordable, supported by government incentives, he saw an opportunity to further reduce his carbon footprint. Today, 95% of his company’s electricity needs are met through solar and wind power, and he is determined to reach 100%, achieving energy self-sufficiency and net-zero status.

Inspired by Rotary International’s new focus area, Protecting the Environment, Devarajan aims to set a strong example for others. He believes in the importance of embracing renewable energy not only to combat climate change but also to inspire others to take action.

A Past President of the Rotary Club of Salem Mid Town in Tamil Nadu, Devarajan has held numerous leadership roles at the district level. He applauds ESRAG’s (Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group) Million Solar Panels Challenge, which he believes will inspire more Rotarians to act, create jobs, and contribute to a cleaner planet. Devarajan plans to join ESRAG soon to further align his personal mission with Rotary’s global commitment to sustainability.

His journey is a testament to the power of leadership and vision in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. By embracing renewable energy and advocating for sustainable practices, Devarajan is not only reducing his own environmental impact but also encouraging others to do the same, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.

Congratulations to everyone who has taken the important step of installing solar panels, whether for yourself or others! Your commitment to renewable energy is worth celebrating. The Million Solar Panels Challenge wants to recognize your contribution to the global transition to clean energy. Please take a moment to log the number of panels you’ve installed and be part of this inspiring movement toward a sustainable future!
