In honor of International Women’s day, March 08

The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) recognizes the link between environmental sustainability and maternal and child health, noting that climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution disproportionately harm women, especially pregnant women and children. The World Health Organization states, “Pregnant women, babies, and children face extreme health risks from climate catastrophes” (WHO, November 2023, p1). These environmental dangers, coupled with socioeconomic challenges, increase burdens on women, particularly in vulnerable communities.
Women are pivotal change agents, making choices that promote environmental sustainability and family well-being. Collaboration between maternal and child health advocates and ESRAG can ensure a comprehensive approach to these climate related challenges. For example, clean cookstoves improve both family and environmental health; training for extreme weather or sustainable agriculture helps families and communities. By empowering women and safeguarding children’s health, Rotary initiatives contribute to more resilient, sustainable communities for future generations.
