ESRAG has an ambitious goal: help Rotarians reach net zero emissions by 2040. To drive this initiative forward, the Climate Solutions Taskforce was established, empowering Rotarians worldwide to implement climate solutions and create measurable environmental impact within their clubs, districts, and communities.
A Clear Vision and Mission
The Taskforce’s mission is to inspire and equip Rotarians with practical tools and proven strategies to reduce carbon footprints and amplify positive climate impact. By leveraging Rotary’s global network, the team continuously expands its reach, ensuring that Rotary plays a crucial role in protecting the planet for future generations.
A Strategic Approach for Lasting Impact
To turn its vision into reality, the Taskforce prioritizes training and education, ensuring that members and clubs have the knowledge and skills needed to take meaningful action. It sets clear targets, tracks progress, and refines strategies over time. A key principle is fostering a positive, engaging atmosphere that encourages clubs to act. Using the resources of the Become Sustainable! project, the team collaborates closely with other ESRAG Taskforces and strategic partners to implement impactful climate solutions.
A Well-Structured Global Network
The Taskforce is organized into three regions—The Americas, Africa & Europe, and Asia & Oceania—each led by a dedicated Regional Team Leader. Within these regions, specific roles drive targeted action:
- Ambassadors: Engage clubs, give presentations, and inspire action.
- Impact Analysts: Help clubs measure their CO₂ footprint and handprint, estimate project impacts, and support carbon-neutral initiatives.
- Solution Support Specialists: Guide clubs in executing successful projects, documenting best practices, and sourcing innovative solutions.
- Communication Team: Ensures visibility through articles, newsletters, and social media while coordinating with ESRAG and Rotary publications.
A North Star for Climate Action
While the Taskforce operates through a structured framework, the personal commitment of its team members remains its driving force. Recognizing the urgency of climate action, the Taskforce is dedicated to making Rotary a leader in sustainability.
Michael Koch’s book, The 7 Steps to a Climate-Friendly and Sustainable Rotary Club, available as an (e-)book on Amazon, serves as a practical roadmap for clubs worldwide, offering step-by-step guidance on integrating sustainability into their activities.
By embracing this mission and leveraging a strong, structured team, Rotary is positioned not only to meet but to exceed its sustainability goals—ensuring that Service Above Self also means stewardship for the planet.
