About Our Chapter
Welcome to the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG)!
ESRAG was formed to empower Rotarian and non-Rotarian members to take actions to sustain our environment, particularly to stabilize our climate. How can ESRAG help you?
ESRAG provides an organizing point and informational resources to share information with clubs and communities about sustainable practices and the global humanitarian crisis of climate change.
Our action model:
Identify environmental leaders within the Rotary world, assist them in initiating environmental service projects that are meaningful to THEM, help where we can, and acknowledge and publicize their awesome work.
We look forward to collaborating with you to bring Rotary’s ‘Service Above Self’ ethic to solving environmental problems.
UN Environment: Rotarians Vital to Climate Solutions
With pollution and climate change wreaking economic havoc, causing more than 7 million premature deaths a year, and fueling the refugee crisis, “we are doing a poor job for our planet and our peoples’ health as we pursue economic development,” warned Dr. Hartwig Kremer, Head of UN Environment’s Global Environment Monitoring Unit, in a speech to ESRAG members in Hamburg. But because we are “in touch with local communities, professionals, and business leaders worldwide,” he added, Rotarians can catalyze solutions.
The UN provides the framework and tracks global progress: “In September 2015, with the backing of 193 world leaders, 17 Sustainable Development Goals were agreed to eradicate extreme poverty and achieve a healthy, sustainable world by the year 2030.

Teach Your Neighbors to Mine Their Junk Drawers!
ESRAG and Redwood Materials have a new toolkit American Rotarians can use to launch lithium-ion battery recycling in your community. Redwood can recapture about 95% of the critical materials and use them to make new components for rechargeable batteries to meet sharply-rising demand. Read more so you can teach your neighbors to mine their junk drawers.
Gratitude for John Mathers
Rotarians around the world share gratitude for John Mathers, founder of the Rotary Climate Action Team Network – now more than 900 clubs strong. In this remembrance Rotary friends and colleagues celebrate his impact in equipping Rotarians for climate action, his dedication to building the leadership of youth, and his tremendous empathy and zest.
Youth defend climate in court
The landmark ruling in Held v State of Montana raised hopes as youth defend climate in court cases around the world. But litigation is not sufficient to protect children’s rights to a safe environment. Rotarians can help by advocating for policies to end subsidies for fossil fuels and to promote investment in energy efficiency and clean energy for homes, business, industry and transportation.
